Whether it holds the draw of a regular tourist attraction or has more of a spiritual lure, Stonehenge has proved to be a popular travel destination for people from all over the world. Prior to visiting the landmark, many will find it beneficial to undertake some research to be aware of what to expect and how to make the journey worthwhile.
Location
Located in Wiltshire, a rural area in the south west of the UK, Stonehenge is situated on an open field and is surrounded by the same. Despite its apparent remote location, the site is well served by travel links to ensure a relatively easy journey for visitors. Many believe the idyllic countryside location adds to the wonder of the stones. Worshipping at both solar and lunar events regularly take place at the site.
History
The history of Stonehenge is a very long and varied one, which is often the reason why many choose to visit at all. Though the parts of the prehistoric monument were erected at different stages, it is known to be at least 5000 years old with the stone circle dating back to the Neolithic era.
Mystique
The mysterious qualities of Stonehenge has proven to be a draw for many people and it continues to be to this day. While some believe it was a burial site for prehistoric man, others claim it to be an elaborate sundial. No matter the purpose for which it was erected, it continues to hold healing qualities for many people.
Events
Stonehenge is maintained by English Heritage, an organization that exists to advise on, maintain and promote historic sites. Not only do they look after Stonehenge in this capacity, but they also organize and run events that take place there. Family day trips, guided tours and themed events, such visits during Halloween, are all possible during a trip to this historic location. Those that are interested in archaeology and geology will also be catered to with specialist outings to explore the site and research its history.
